Do you need marketing? That’s always a big question, and one that many businesses cannot answer. But, the simple answer is it depends on how well business is going. Are you operating at, or near, 100% of capacity (i.e. you have all the business you can handle)? If the answer is yes, then a) congratulations – nice work, and b) no, you don’t need marketing. But if the answer is no (and from our experience that’s the case with 90% of businesses), then you do need marketing!

In sophisticated marketing companies, the role of marketing is to create ‘lift’ – an increase in sales. Once you’ve created enough ‘lift’ you can ‘pause’ your marketing – when you do, the key is to keep tracking sales, and when they start to drop (which they will, because you have competition), you re-start your marketing to drive more lift. Bottom-line, you need to use your marketing to maintain a ‘base’ business and generate ‘lift’ when you’ve got spare capacity and need more sales. That’s it.
